Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Republic of Kenya, non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Congo and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi H.E. Sultan Hajiyev has more than 28 years of experience as both government official as well as international civil servant. He has served in progressively senior leadership positions and successfully designed and managed a wide range of important international and regional initiatives.
While with the Department of Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ambassador Hajiyev managed several key strategic initiatives and missions. Working closely with senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, as well as with other ministries and government institutions of the country, he facilitated major international partnership programs and projects, both bilateral and multilateral, with special emphasis on post-conflict reconstruction, rehabilitation and humanitarian demining. Ambassador Hajiyev also represented Azerbaijan at various international forums including major environment and urban planning and development related events including previous COP and WUF sessions.
He has authored and co-authored several articles both in national as well as in international media, including CNN and Al Jazeera.
During his career as an international civil servant, Mr. Sultan Hajiyev worked both at the UN HQ (New York) as well as in several complex emergency countries. He has also gained experience in managing challenges of middle and low-income countries, having demonstrated an ability to provide professional leadership based on UN’s mandate and UN values, to plan, organize and control partnerships and programmes including under the most exacting circumstances. This included Libya, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. During his assignment in Somalia, he initiated and managed strategic UN/EU/WB post-disaster needs assessment.
Ambassador Hajiyev is fluent in English and Russian. He also speaks Turkish.
